But how did we get here? What are we doing right now? And where are we doing?

At the heart of every invention lies a story, often deeply personal and rooted in real-world challenges. My journey with Chimoney is no different. When I first conceived the idea of Chimoney, it was more than just another fintech venture. It was a vision - a dream to connect every payment network globally, ensuring seamless fund flow to anyone, anywhere, regardless of currency, country, or financial status. Today, as I sit down to write about this significant milestone in Chimoney's journey, I'm overwhelmed with a whirlwind of emotions, gratitude and excitement, and memories.

## From Nigeria to Canada: A Dream, A Struggle

My journey into the world of fintech was not just a mere business endeavor. It was personal.  Growing up in Nigeria, I've seen the challenges people face when making cross-border transactions or simply trying to get paid for their hard work. The barriers, the delays, the fees - it seemed so unnecessarily complicated. 

Moving from Nigeria to the snowy landscapes of Canada was a decision fueled by dreams of a brighter future. The UofS promised a world of opportunities. But those dreams were soon clouded by the harsh realities of financial struggles, an outcome of government instability back home. Each day became a race against time, with the looming threat of unpaid tuition and a [jeopardized student visa status and deportation.](https://medium.com/@uchi/i-could-not-pay-my-tuition-and-i-almost-dropped-out-of-university-79fdb54414)

Yet, amidst this chaos, the dream persisted. Through sheer determination and countless hours of hard work, I not only graduated but went on to contribute to tech giants like Shopify, RBC, and IBM Canada. Success in the corporate world, however, didn't mean the end of my journey; it was just the beginning. Today marks the beginnings of another new beginning for Chimoney!

## The Birth of Chimoney
Inspired by the zeal to give back and create a community to connect ambitious Africans to tech opportunities globally, I founded AfricaHacks, a platform nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship among African youth. But an all too familiar challenge resurfaced. Paying winners spread across Africa and in 10 other nations became a painstaking task, echoing the financial challenges I faced years ago.

This obstacle, ironically, became the inception of Chimoney. A platform designed not just as a business but as a solution to a problem millions face daily.

Hello and welcome to the Chimoney blog! Today, I will take you through our journey with the Google for Startups Accelerator (GFSA) Canada program and I will share our Google for Startup Application process for Startups considering joining the program. The weeks we spent in the program were a period of immense growth, learning, and innovation, and we're excited to share our experience with you!

## Who We Are: Chimoney at a Glance

First, let's delve into who we are at Chimoney. Based in Toronto, our startup builds a Payment Infrastructure to Make Value Move globally. We leverage advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), to offer hyper-personalized payout and offramp products that connect multiple payment options like Bank rails, Mobile Money, Gift cards, Mobile Wallets, and so much more. Our mission is simple yet profound – to unlock economic opportunities for everyone, everywhere​.

Our ambition is to build a truly connected global financial network. This vision has led us to establish connections with banks in 40 countries, thousands of unique gift card products globally, and mobile money and bill payments in 20 countries. With these connections, we help businesses and developers move value between different currencies, countries, asset types, and ledgers​​.

## The Google for Startups Accelerator Canada Experience
The Google for Startups Accelerator Canada program has been a significant milestone in our journey. Being one of the 12 Startups selected for the 2023 Canada cohort of this program allowed us to tap into a wealth of resources and learning opportunities.

Some of the highlights of the Google for Startups Accelerator Canada Program for Chimoney are:

The mentorship component of the Google for Startups Accelerator Canada program is one of its most invaluable aspects. Under this initiative, we at Chimoney had the chance to work directly with seasoned industry leaders and Googlers who shared their wealth of knowledge, experience, and insights with us. These mentors guided us through the complexities of growing a Startup, from strategic decision-making to overcoming operational challenges. They helped us navigate the business and sales landscape, identify opportunities, and anticipate potential pitfalls, ultimately steering us toward success.


### 2) Technical Project Support
The technical project support provided by the program is another crucial benefit that significantly boosted our growth. As part of the Programme, we were granted access to Google Cloud benefits and expert training for Google Engineers, which enabled us to address our most pressing technical needs and enhance our AI and ML capabilities to build recommendations into one of our products. We explored new technologies, implemented cutting-edge solutions, and optimized our systems for improved functionality and user experience. The support we received not only fueled our immediate technical growth but also equipped us with the skills and knowledge to tackle future technical challenges independently.


### 3) Deep Dives
Lastly, the deep dives were an integral part of our learning and growth during the program. These sessions allowed us to delve into specific business areas, from product design and customer acquisition to leadership and team development. In these intensive and hands-on workshops, we had the opportunity to scrutinize our strategies, processes, and performance in detail. We analyzed our strengths and weaknesses, learned new tactics and methodologies, and gained deeper insights into our market and competition. These deep dives fostered a culture of continuous learning and improvement within our team and played a vital role in shaping our strategic direction.

We also integrated over 500 million products from Amazon and Shopify, enhancing our e-commerce capability. In the past year, Chimoney experienced an increase in the number of User Accounts on our platform. **Introducing Payment Requests (formerly Metaward)**

Payment Requests saves Enterprises, Community leaders, Managers and Even Organizers time by providing a Payment Request Link they can share with people they need to pay. So, instead of asking for Bank or other Payment details, you can send your  Payment Request Link to users to request payments from you in just a few clicks. As a result, Payment Requests makes paying for services, products, or any other type of transaction more straightforward than ever.

The Payment Requests feature is straightforward to use. As an Organization or Corporate user of Chimoney, you can generate a unique link that can be shared via email, social media, or any other messaging platform with which people can request payments from you. When the recipient clicks on the link, they will be taken to a secure payment portal where they can enter the amount and other information about the requested payment and then submit the request.  

As the Admin of the Organization (AP Team, Community lead, Manager, HR, Employee Experience lead, Donor Organization or Head of Finance) on your end, you’ll be notified and be able to view all requested payments and handle the settlement from your Chimoney Dashboard.

This feature is perfect for AP Teams, Community leads, Managers, HRs, Employee Experience leads, Donor Organizations, Heads of Finance, Event Organisers and everyone who usually has to send payments regularly. With the  Payment Request Link, there's no need to deal with complicated payment platforms or manually track down people you need to Pay or Invoices. Instead, everything is handled automatically, making focusing on what matters more efficient.

One of the key benefits of the Payment Request Link feature is its flexibility. Your contractors can easily edit the link to specific payment amounts, descriptions, invoice links and other details, making it easy to tailor their requests to their needs. In September 20222, we at Chimoney were thrilled to be accepted and selected, amongst the other 100 businesses across southern Ontario, Canada, to join the program and receive up to $100,000 in seed funding. By participating in the  AC:Studio accelerator program, we get the amazing chance to work with innovation partners, learn from experts through mentorship sessions and training, and acquire essential market resources. What’s more, we will be participating in AC:Studio Innovation Showcase, happening on March 2, 2023, where we have an in-person Chimoney booth and the opportunity to network with liked-mined people.

Our aim with the first set of ambassadors was not only for them to execute the ambassadorship responsibility but also for us as Chimoney team to learn how to better serve a memorable experience to the  ambassadors and support their ideas while they were delivering their engagement and to sustain this community program. 

After three months of collaborating with ChiSquad 001, we did performance evaluations based on their engagements on social media  — creating and sharing posts related to Chimoney’s brand. We must say during this 3-month period, we enjoyed interacting with our ambassadors’ content created to amplify Chimoney’s brand awareness and participation, especially their contribution to [Chimoney’s first Hacktoberfest](https://chimoney.io/blogs/chimoney-x-hacktoberfest-2022-our-first-year-and-what-we-learned) in October 2022.

Meet Khadijah Amusat, a software/blockchain engineer, open source contributor, and model!  She aspires to be the finest blockchain developer in the world and create one of the top initiatives that address a global problem. Khadijah bags our ChiSquad Spotlight for the program's first round due to her enthusiasm toward the Chimoney products and her willingness to get things done. Here’s the summary of our cool chat with her.

### **Did you have any goals when joining the ChiSquad program?**
Khadijah: Yes. In addition to getting more users and developers involved in the community, my goal was to have everyone talking about and using Chimoney. [Awww. Love this!]

### **Has the program helped you achieve the goals and how?**
Khadijah: Chimoney is a great community with great people that encourages growth. We weren't pressured to do anything we didn't have prior knowledge about as ChiHeroes really helped my creative side. — I was able to think and come up with different ideas which is one of the challenges I had and personally I liked it!

### **What is your greatest achievement as a ChiSquad member?**
Khadijah: In the past three months, initiating the Chimoney’s first Hacktoberfest program and personally educating other members of my communities about how to contribute to Chimoney have been some of my greatest accomplishments. It was rewarding to see other developers from other communities join Chimoney as a result of my posts or evangelism. 😇

### **What principle (motto) do you live by?**
Khadijah: Always show up and build in public no matter how you feel, you don't know who’s watching.

### **Tell our readers one fun fact about you**
Khadijah: I am a fashion/runway model in addition to being a great cook and occasional baker.

### **What advice would you give those interested in joining the ChiCommunity?**
Khadijah: What’s worth the effort is worth doing well; three months is enough to create an impact in a community, and you should join Chimoney because you want to achieve something amazing for yourself, Chimoney, and the entire tech ecosystem.

In the course of the first two weeks of November 2022, we're excited to share that we managed to make our presence at four different events - in different parts of the world. First up was the GDG DevFest Nairobi on November 5th in Naibori, Kenya. The second was the Interledger Summit on November 12th in New Orleans, USA. The third one was the HACKFEST by Ingressive for Good, and finally, the fourth one was the She Codes Africa SCA Summit 2022, both in Lagos, Nigeria.

A person could ask … what does Chimoney have in common with four tech events? The answer is simple: We're sharing our mission of unlocking economic opportunity for everyone. Plus we kept emphasizing the value of community building. We could say that, within a 2-week period, Chimoney managed to tick off almost every box on the bucket list for fun activities we would love to do with communities. Here’re the stories. 

## **GDG DevFest Nairobi: The importance of community**
#### **What did we do at DevFest Nairobi**
At the Google Developer Group (GDG) DevFest held in Nairobi, Kenya, our ChiHeroes Anselmo Flavian and Phylis Atieno represented Chimoney for our first official event booth in Kenya. 

The event attendees and booth visitors were very enthusiastic to know more about Chimoney. All the swags (100 fliers & 154 stickers) we brought ran out within an hour. We’ll definitely bring more next time - wink. 😉 With the robust solutions we offered: ChiPay (bulk payout app), ChiConnect (super API) and [ChiSpend](https://chispend.com/) (embeddable crypto shopping marketplace), we got a deep conversation with a bunch of DevRels and developers who were interested in adopting Chimoney products in several areas, especially using ChiPay to send the bulk disbursement for their events and hackathons. Some folks applied to join Chimoney Community for help sharing our story and product knowledge with their own community. YAY! 

#### **Social listening through online giveaway — global participants welcome**
To make our community stay in the DevFest Nairobi hype, we ran a [giveaway on our Twitter](https://twitter.com/chimoney_io/status/1586055630992842754) asking our community about tech conferences or tech events they’re excited to meet us next. And we just loved to see the participation from several countries. We also sent Chimoney as a reward to random lucky winners, and they could redeem it to anything that’s available in their countries. Smart, right?

#### **What did we learn from this event**
Since GDG DevFest events are held in multiple countries and cities around the world, and the GDG global community is truly amazing, we at Chimoney are planning to sponsor or partner with other DevFest in other locations to broaden our connection with inspiring techies.

## **Interledger Summit: The Interledger Summit: The power of community to create financial inclusion**
#### **Why the Interledger Summit is important and Chimoney’s contribution**
In addition to recognizing the importance of community building in the payment space, Uchi Uchibeke, Chimoney founder and CEO, joined the 2-day of the Interledger community gathering from 12 to 13 November 2022. While this was a great chance for Uchi, presenting Chimoney to connect with community who push vital work in the financial inclusion and payments space, he also gave a showcase (speaking) on the topic: Financial Inclusion, Accessibility and Monetization. No doubt that all ChiHeroes are always excited about the possibilities of the Interledger protocol when it comes to financial inclusion since there’re a lot of initiatives to do with our mission to unlock economic opportunity for everyone.

#### **Financial inclusion. Let's hear the voices from our commuunity.**
During the first day of the event, we ran a [live poll on our Twitter](https://twitter.com/chimoney_io/status/1591539875542892545) asking for voice about the product catalog we should add more for people to enjoy redeeming their Chimoney or [spend crypto](https://chispend.com/) and tokens on ChiSpend. Most of our community members are people in and want to be in tech space, the result show that they’re ready to invest their time and other resources to enroll in courses. Good news is that, now, the Community Manager or Program Manager could support this movement when they reward or gift their folks with Chimoney, via ChiPay. Then, Chimoney receivers could just redeem it to anything they would love, including online courses on Skillshare. And same goes with Interledger ecosystem to pay and spend from such protocol.

We also enjoyed the social listening practice from our live watch party and a [live giveaway](https://twitter.com/chimoney_io/status/1591445808603631617) asking what’s the favourite quote from Uchi’s talk. Our community was truly excited about how Chimoney products save time and effort when it comes to cross-border payout, and also impressed by our movement to make the Interledger works in all countries.

#### **What we learned and opportunities**
Overall, it’s a wonderful time catching up with this vibrant Interledger Community and learned what the others do to create a financial inclusion world. Uchi shared Chimoney’s commitment to reach such goals and here’re the plan for the Interledger ecosystem:

## **HACKFEST: The beauty of tech and collaboration**

This one too! On Saturday, November 12th, Ingressive for Good (I4G) held an annual tech event in Lagos, Nigeria, to open people's mind up to the possibilities in the African tech ecosystem when no techies are left behind. At the HACKFEST or I4GHACKFEST, four ChiHeroes, including Hammed, Ruth, Cynthia and Angel hosted a welcome Chimoney booth for the event participants/booth visitor to immerse themselves into Chimoney’s world — thanks Faheed, our graphic and brand designer who created event standees and cutout photo stand. 

The ChiHeroes from both the Client Enablement and Product teams provided a personalized product demo, gave out Chimoney stickers, tote bags and t-shirts, and offered a referral bonus. They said the the time did fly fast on the event date. Yss, everyone got the best day there.

#### **What we learned from I4GHACKFEST 2022 and the next steps**
It’s once again we’re reminded how important it is to build and engage with the community in tech space. At the HACKFEST, we’re warmly welcomed and we took all the challenges to make them opportunities. The questions and suggestions, considered as a quest for us, left us with homework to improve the products and plan for extra research for adding new features.

Going to tech conferences or tech events really connects Chimoney with the tech community and the other amazing projects. We’ll absolutely seek opportunities to sponsor tech events to share what we build and gain valuable feedback from the community. 


## **SCA Summit: The happy vibes through community support**
Well, there’s actually another tech community we engaged on Saturday, November 12th. It’s She Codes Africa’s SCA Summit 2022, in Lagos, Nigeria, with a goal to gather the members from different states in Nigeria and neighbouring African countries for a hybrid summit themed "Elevating the African Woman in Tech". 

She Code Africa is a non-profit organization focused on celebrating and empowering young girls and women in tech across Africa. We at Chimoney always appreciate the SCA community and their mission to promote equality for women in African tech roles, and we’ve been supporting SCA events for years now. 

During the SCA Summit 2022, Omotola Omotaya, our Community Management Lead at Chimoney who’s also leading the same role for She Codes Africa, operated the Summit and also represented Chimoney at the event for everyone who might be interested in Chimoney story and solutions. 

Exciting initiatives this year? We ran a donation campaign amongst ChiHeroes and managed to [give $400 to the SCA community](https://twitter.com/chimoney_io/status/1591372277886504960). Here, we sent Chimoney to queens (She Codes Africa community) who attended the summit virtually so they could redeem it to internet data and got encouraged to keep up their amazing contributions.

## **Final thoughts**
We really appreciate the opportunities to do different things and totally enjoy the fun pace in November. And we’re always learning from every new experience and from any communities we engage with. Hacktoberfest is a global movement that happens every October. It’s an initiative to encourage and challenge developers to contribute code to open source projects. As a result, the entire open source community benefits from it. And we at Chimoney have been fortunate to be a part of this amazing initiative for the first time! 
 
So now let’s see how our participation story has made us and our community excited and enjoyed over the past month during the Hacktoberfest 2022.

## **What is Hacktoberfest?**
Hacktoberfest is an annual event held in the month of October (Now you know why it’s called Hack*tober*fest.) to celebrate open source, its benefits to community, society, and the people who connect it. The event was originally created by DigitalOcean in 2014 as a way to engage their developer community and celebrate the practice of giving back. So, yes, it is an opportunity for everyone to discover and contribute to the Repos by accepting the challenges and getting rewarded for doing so.

## **Chimoney’s First Hacktoberfest Experience**
Chimoney is a fintech Startup, officially started the business in early 2021, and “fun” is what we love. You might think that Hacktoberfest is only limited to developers, but it isn’t. Anyone who is passionate about technology (aka. a better world) can contribute and participate in this virtual tech event, based on the challenges each community is putting. Chimoney’s Hacktoberfest was opened to both developers and non-developer friends. Like the other tech conferences we went, we make sure everyone could take part in our activities regardless of their expertise. 
 
During the event, we invited everyone in our community and their friends to contribute to our [repository on GitHub](https://rebrand.ly/b68xtmt), focusing on our 2 products: [ChiSpend](https://chispend.com/) and [ChiConnect](https://www.chimoney.io/chiconnect).

The best part? We received warm welcomes from the community members. We have to say that our participation in this event was one of the best experiences ever.

## **ChiHeroes enjoyed our high collaborative culture during the Hacktoberfest.**
ChiHeroes or Chimoney employees joined force to make this first Hacktoberfest memorable. Everyone, working fully remotely from different part of the world, had fun collaborating across departments. The Product squads set up the sandbox and repository with clear, inviting instructions and brainstormed the challenges for contributors to participate. The Community team members heavily promoted and encouraged the participation in this open-source project and came up with ideas for show appreciation. No one could resist our flexible gift and our t-shirts. The Client Enablement and Customer Success talents supported with responses to enquiries and approve the API requests. The Marketing lovers created the hype and kept inviting folks to participate and win Chimoney credits and cutomized swag. That said, our culture and team collaboration made this happened and made it even more fun. 

## **Results of Hacktoberfest 2022**
Our journey of Hacktoberfest is just begun. We’re more confident, and we’re building better relationships with open source communities and contributing back more than ever. In total, we have of 21 issues, 17 active contributors, 25 Merged Pull Request. Each merged PRs contributor was awarded $25 in Chimoney credit. We got one contributor with 4 merged PRs, thereby unlocking the Chimoney t-shirt reward.

Contribution is not limited to code. It can also be with documentation, bug reports, and even copywriting suggestions. Everyone starts somewhere. We’re so happy to see Chimoney community contributed from everywhere in the world. Sending rewards was super quick and easy, done by [ChiPay](https://chimoney.io/chipay), our bulk payout platform, and it was just loved by the winning contributors since the reward could be redeemed or cashed out to anything, from 500+ global gift cards to 1000+ bank deposits, airtime and mobile money.
